The Queen of Provence, the city of Aix offers round the clock entertainment for its residents and visitors alike. Its typically southern charm, its subtle hints of Marseille and its historical treasures make it a destination of choice if you want to truly embrace the Provencal lifestyle. As the birthplace of the famous painter Paul Cézanne, whose workshop is open to the public, the richness offered by the center of this ancient Roman spa town won't fail to surprise. From the completely classical Mazarin district to the steep streets of old Aix and the stunning Saint-Sauveur cathedral with its Gothic and Romanesque facade, Aix-en-Provence is full of treats. But you still need to know where to find them!
The beautiful city of Aix is not always easily discovered and, just as is the case for the traboules of Lyon, it's only by taking the time to stroll through its colorful center that we discover its true character. Resolutely bourgeois, Aix-en-Provence has around twenty or so private mansions, reflecting the opulence of a city proud of its architectural heritage that sparkles every year during the International Opera Festival. So it's impossible to miss the Pavillon de Vendôme, the Hôtel de Caumont, recently converted into a museum, or the 1,000 fountains that make this city so legendary.
But Aix-en-Provence can also be enjoyed by taking a step back and exploring its surrounding areas. In addition to the famous Montagne Sainte-Victoire, majestic when admired from the neighboring village of Le Tholonet, the Bibémus quarries and the Bimont dam give a wonderful glimpse of the Aix hinterland.
