The Merchandise Mart
It’s impossible to pass through the city centre without noticing it: the imposing Merchandise Mart Art Deco building where the Chicago River branches off, was for many years the largest commercial building in the world. Spread over 375,000m2 and 25 floors, when it was built in 1930, the Mart was a wholesale market bringing together buyers and sellers under the same roof. Today, it is home to businesses, events and an area dedicated to design professionals, as well as restaurants and showrooms for furniture and homeware open to the public. Start at the Concierge Desk, where you can pick up a map and a list of sellers. Then you can make your way from LuxeHome, a huge space dedicated to kitchens and bathrooms on the first floor, to the only Lalique crystal showroom in America on the 18th floor.
