Temple of Literature
Vietnam’s first national university, this 11th-century temple still retains a sense of philosophical tranquility. Wander through its five peaceful courtyards to find traditional pavilions with sweeping, red-tiled roofs and scarlet altars dedicated to Confucius, awash with symbolic gold calligraphy. Among its treasures 82 engraved stone stelae honor former students, encircling the lyrically named Well of Heavenly Clarity. At the heart of the temple, surrounded by fountains, stone statues and formal gardens, stands the Khue Van pavilion. The official symbol of present-day Hanoi also provides a timeless reminder of the temple’s illustrious former life. Inside, the light shines through four round windows to form a star - the traditional Vietnamese symbol for literature.
