Art & Design Beijing, China
A gem of the Chinese capital, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, the Summer Palace is well worth visiting. It was the Qianlong Emperor who commissioned the construction of this magnificent example of Chinese landscaped gardens in the 18th century. Despite the damage caused by the Opium Wars a century later, its peaceful design continues to convey the Chinese philosophy of the balance between mankind and nature. Framed by the shimmering water of Kunming Lake, its islands are overlooked by Longevity Hill, which is surrounded by temples, pavilions and towers offering fantastic views and a peaceful atmosphere.
