Sablon Antiques District
Whilst, some yards further down, the Place du Jeu de Balle sets out its flea market wares, in the Place du Grand Sablon celebrated antique dealers offer their rarities every weekend. Surrounded by chocolate shops and in the shadow of the Gothic-style church of Notre Dame du Sablon, the temporary stalls offer jewelry, silverware, paintings, furniture, etc. The origin of this Brussels market goes back to 1958 when an antique dealer of the district, Georges Van de Weghe, asked permission of the parish priest to display some of his engravings after Sunday mass. Permission was given on condition that he set up a market bringing together different exhibitors.
