City description

In one of the most vibrant capitals of the world, a trip to Manila is a disorienting experience. Faced with its magnificent skyscrapers, Manila saves up a more human spectacle for its visitors.

The city is a reflection of the whole of the Philippines, a melting pot of Chinese, Hindu and Western influences. Just as Chinese cuisine meets with Spanish flavors, this is a colorful heritage, a disorder of Western senses that makes your stay in Manila an emotionally-charged experience. The disorienting feeling continues as you explore the Intramuros neighborhood, reflecting an old-fashioned image with its outdated style, reflecting its struggle through some of Manila's more difficult times and its many Hispanic and more broadly, colonial, vestiges.

A unique cultural deposit left by the West on the other side of the world, old Manila first offers an austere image with its city walls, its parapets and its former cells that are now restaurants. A high point of the site, Fort Santiago offers visitors a moving walk amid these sixteenth century remains where eras come together with memorable eclecticism. But like a ghost hovering over Manila and its generous tropical climate, Spain continues to inhabit the soul of Manila through the ancient stones of the church of San Augustin. Gracefully Sevillian and located on the other side of the Pasig River, the Basilica of the Black Nazarene is an impossible bridge between the Philippine capital and beautiful Andalusia, thousands of miles away. A quite unique experience therefore awaits the traveler arriving on Manilan soil, as is asserted by the capital's hedonistic and wild nightlife. The bravest among you might want to wait for sunrise so you can watch the first rays of sun illuminate the city from Manila Bay.

Travel transportation

Transportation

Transportation in Manila includes many options: local taxis, private car services like Uber and Grab, rental cars, buses, suburban trains, jeepneys and even boats traveling along Manila Bay.

Trains are a convenient way to discover Manila. There are two main train systems: the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT). Both have interchange stations where passengers can transfer between the two.

Trains run regularly from 4:30am to 10:30pm. Ticket costs start at ₱13. Tickets can be purchased from manned ticket windows or from machines that accept both coins and bills.

Keep in mind that when driving in Manila, you must drive on the right side of the road.

Taxis

Hundreds of taxis operate in Manila day and night. You can hail them on the street, find them at a taxi rank or book through a Manila taxi firm. Fares start with a flag-down rate of ₱30 for the first 500 meters. A charge of ₱3.50 applies for each succeeding 500 meters.

getting to & from the airport

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) serves Manila and its surrounds via four terminals located close to each other:

-        Terminal 1 serves the majority of international flights
-        Terminal 2, or the Centennial Terminal, serves domestic and international flights for Philippine Airlines
-        Terminal 3 serves both domestic and international flights
-        Terminal 4 is the one that serves most domestic flights

NAIA terminals are 15 kilometers from Manila and the journey takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. There is a shuttle service to transfer between the different terminals.

Metered taxis are available and private transfers can be arranged at the airport.

A cheaper option to get to the airport is to take the MRT train to Taft Avenue and catch the airport shuttle from the station.
