Art & Design Brussels, Belgium
Built for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, this silver giant with rounded forms is based on the structure of the atoms of an iron crystal, enlarged 165 billion times. Designed by engineer André Waterkeyn, it is a testament to the enthusiasm aroused by science on the cusp of the 1960s. Originally the structure was covered in aluminium sheets, but now they are stainless steel. It is possible to enter the building to visit themed exhibitions, have something to eat or simply enjoy the view offered by this edifice built 8 kilometers from the city which soars a height of 102 metres.
